Part-time Online Hotel Qualifications

Many leaners are not able to study full time for a hotel qualification as the need to earn an income comes first. The current volatile situation at universities further makes e-learning an attractive option, writes Christa Badenhorst.

Guvon Academy now offers a formal, accredited hotel qualification part-time – be that during your coffee breaks, lunch hour of after work.  All that the student needs is Wi-Fi or an internet connection and an email address.

With the unemployment rate at 26.4% end of 2015 according to Fin24, 5.5 million SA citizens unemployed and a further 14.8 million people who are not economically active, we all know that to better yourself and your income potential, it makes sense to get a formal qualification and work experience behind your name.

Guvon Academy, based in Muldersdrift at Glenburn Lodge & Spa, added E-learning to its offering this year.  The courses in Tourism, Events and Hospitality range from Kids Party planning, domestic worker courses to Executive Waiter and Barman, Events Management and Professional Chef qualifications, to mention a few.

Application is a simple process – new students can register online at www.guvonacademy.co.za by completing a form and returning it to the Academy. Unlike universities and colleges, E-students can enrol any time of the year.   Upon paying a 50% deposit for the course, the student receives a log-in code and the course contents is immediately available online. Students can download the contents or choose to access the material on the internet. To ease the financial strain, a monthly payment plan is available.

Courses are competitively priced and range from R450 per module (one month) up to the professional cookery qualification which is for 12 months at R15 000pp. Students are tested on completed modules with an online quiz. Live chats and live skype demonstrations are available to assist leaners. Some courses require a practical training component which will be done at one of the six Guvon Hotel properties.

Upon completion of the course, students may be absorbed in the hotel group should vacancies be available and the student qualifies for the position.
