Group73 Announce Next 24 Hour Survival Course

Group73’s next Bear Grylls Survival Academy 24 Hour Adult course takes place on the weekend of the 1st and 2nd of August 2015 in the majestic, mountainous Magaliesberg region of Gauteng in South Africa. As always, Group73 and the Bear Grylls Survival Academy guarantee an adventure experience second to none. All participants stand a chance to win an autographed copy of Bear Grylls’ biography, ‘Mud, Sweat & Tears’, as well as a personalised ride in an Alouette 3 helicopter.

On the 2nd and 3rd of May 2015, Group73 held the very first South African Bear Grylls Survival Academy event. We took a group of journalists and clients on an adventure they’d only previously seen on one of Bear’s many shows.

Proceedings kicked off with a briefing by the Bear Grylls Survival Academy accredited Group73 instructors at the De Hoek Country Hotel, and as the details of all of the elements of the course were fully explained, the reactions were equal parts super-excited and very, very pensive! The course covers a wide range of challenging survival skills.

The identification and preparation of edible fauna and flora, navigational techniques, shelter building techniques, trap and snare skills, abseiling, helicopter casualty evacuation, knots and knives, and emergency bush first aid are just a few examples. The practical application of these learnt skills is where the fun really begins, and every single participant was challenged, and ultimately inspired throughout the weekend. Great bonds were formed as the team was educated in, and encouraged to apply dynamic survival skills.

About BGSA: Regarded as the most challenging and empowering survival course on the planet, the Bear Grylls Survival Academy (BGSA) is designed to provide enthusiasts from around the world the opportunity to learn Bear’s extreme survival techniques. The current portfolio of courses are tailored to both adults and young explorers, in diverse locations including the mountains and forests of the UK, the mountains of Colorado, New York State and California in the USA, the deserts of the UAE, the vast wilderness of Australia and the wild terrain of Zimbabwe; with planned launches in both South Africa and China.

About Bear Grylls: Bear Grylls has become known around the world as one of the most recognized faces of survival and outdoor adventure. His journey to this acclaim started in the UK on the Isle of Wight, where his late father taught him to climb and sail. Trained from a young age in martial arts, Bear went on to spend three years as a soldier in the British Special Forces, serving with 21 SAS. It was here that he perfected many of the skills that his fans all over the world enjoy watching him pit against mother-nature.

Despite a free-fall parachuting accident in Africa, where he broke his back in three places, and after enduring months in military rehabilitation, Bear went on to become one of the youngest ever climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

Bear went on to star in the Channel 4 series: Escape to the Legion and seven series of the Discovery Channel’s Emmy nominated TV show Man Vs Wild and Born Survivor, which has become one of the most watched shows on the planet, reaching an estimated 1.2 billion viewers. Off screen, Bear has lead record-breaking expeditions, from Antarctica to the Arctic, which in turn have raised over $2.5million for children around the world. In recognition for his expertise and service, Bear was appointed as the youngest ever Chief Scout to over half a million scouts in the UK, was awarded an honorary commission as a Lieutenant-Commander in the Royal Navy and as a Lieutenant-Colonel in the notoriously tough Royal Marines Commandos.

He has authored 15 books, including the No 1 Bestseller: Mud Sweat & Tears which was voted the most influential book in China for 2012. Other titles include: Your Life; Train For It, True Grit, A Survival Guide For Life, Born Survivor, Living Wild, Great Outdoor Adventures, Facing Up, Facing the Frozen Ocean, To My Sons and seven children’s fiction novels titled Mission: Survival.

Summer 2013 saw Bear’s new US TV series: Get Out Alive with Bear Grylls running on NBC and voted the No 1 new network reality show in the 18-49 age category. The show aired worldwide on Discovery Channel alongside a further series: Bear Grylls: Escape from Hell and Bear Grylls: Extreme Survival Caught on Camera. This year Bear has added some fresh programming to his slate, hosting the hit adventure show ‘Running Wild’ on NBC in America, as well as ‘The Island with Bear Grylls’ & ‘Bear’s Wild weekends’ for Channel 4 in the UK.

Bear’s recent appointment as Ambassador for Land Rover will be an exciting journey!
