Hilton Cape Town City Centre has been recognized for its on-going commitment to waste reduction after successfully reducing its landfill output by 73% over the past five months. The eco-friendly initiative was acknowledged recently with the presentation of a special award by FEDHASA CAPE with a placement in the Best Single Resource Management Programme – Waste Category at the 2013 Lilizela-Imvelo Awards for Responsible Tourism
Markus Fritz, general manager, Hilton Cape Town City Centre said: “I am delighted that our on-going conservation efforts have been publicly recognised with a special award for responsible tourism. Sustainability is now embedded in the hotel’s DNA and every single team member knows they have a part to play in upholding our aspirations to make an eco-friendly difference.”
In addition to its award winning waste management programme, Hilton Cape Town City Centre was one of three pioneering hotels in South Africa to participate in a comprehensive re-lamping exercise, in conjunction with corporate partners Eskom and Philips. The pilot programme was an outstanding success and, since November 2012, Hilton Cape Town City Centre has recorded an impressive saving of 329,583 kWh in its energy consumption – equal to enough electricity to power 660 standard homes for a month as well as a reduction of 486 tons in its CO2 emissions, equivalent to the CO2 emissions from 1,103 cars over the same period.
Hilton Cape Town City Centre’s water efficiency initiatives have also registered success. As a result of installing water closet systems and lower flow shower heads and taps, the hotel has made annual savings of 40% compared with traditional systems..
Along with all Hilton Worldwide hotels, and as part of the global company’s LightStay programme, Hilton Cape Town City Centre has installed a special Meeting Impact Calculator Tool to measure the CO2 emissions and environmental impact of all events hosted at the hotel. The tool works by taking account of the number of delegates, accommodation booked, total floor area, catering and the mode of transport utilised.
