New Battlefields Route Website

The Battlefields Route in KwaZulu-Natal has launched a new website at www.battlefieldsroute.co.za, which has a number of interesting options for both tourists and service providers but especially for Battlefield Guides.

Every historical battlefield in the region has been plotted using Google Earth Maps so the user can go right to them in both map form or satellite picture. The main navigation bar, located near the top of each page in a black strip, also breaks down each historical battlefield in the region. For example, clicking on ‘Battlefields’ reveals a drop-down menu with two lists of headings, on the left is a list of the sites relating to that particular war and on the right a bit of background on that war.

Attractions’ are also covered in the new website – the drop-down menu from this navigation bar tab currently features Adventure, Birdlife, Game Parks, Museums and Zulu Heritage, while the ‘Services’ navigation tab features pages for Accommodation, Guides (members directory of the KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields Route and Battlefields Region Guides Association), Restaurants and Tour Guides and Operators. The ‘Towns & Districts’ navigation bar reveals a drop-down menu for Towns (Colenso, Dundee, Eshowe, Ladysmith, Nongoma, Paulpietersburg / Edumbe, Ulundi, uPhongola, Utrcht and Vryheid), while the Districts include Amajuba Municipality, Umzinyathi, Uthukela Municipality and Zululand. The ‘Wildlife’ tab includes Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife (website link) and a page about the Kwa Cheetah Project. ‘What’s On’ features listings on the latest events in the region, which will be regularly updated and currently includes the 3 Provinces Battlefield Trophy 2014 (01 – 03 May) and the International Military History Conference (20 – 22 Oct 2014).

“While we are grateful that the Zululand District Municipality have funded the construction of the new website, we do need to raise some funds to keep the site maintained and updated,” says Dave Sutcliffe, Honorary Secretary of the Battlefields Route and Battlefields Region Guides.

“We have made banner advertising available on the website at very reasonable annual rates for service providers in the region to leverage their awareness and promotions. All the money from advertising goes to the Battlefields Route Association to help it run the web site and promote the Battlefields Region. No one makes any money from it, and yes please – the Route does need your support.” concludes Dave.
