Like everything else in life, casinos have undergone multiple changes over the years for a number of reasons. And, as with most changes, they evolve into something bigger and often better than the original concept.
The biggest and most notable change in the casino industry over the years is the online gambling movement and the impact that this has had on the growth of the gaming market overall, with more and more online games being developed in order to keep up with demand.
The Evolution of Gambling
Let’s back up to the beginning. Gambling dates back to the Paleolithic period, well before written history. The earliest six-sided dice dates back to Mesopotamia in about 3000 BC, while records trace gambling back as far as the 14th century in Japan.
Whilst the precise origin of gambling is unknown, The Ridotto is generally believed to be the first casino. It was established in Venice, Italy in 1638 to provide a controlled gambling environment. Thereafter, casinos started to appear throughout continental Europe in the 19th century, resulting in the gambling boom that created lavish and elegant casinos frequented by the rich and famous.
Casinos in the Desert
Gambling in the US only became the high rolling giant that it is today after the creation of Las Vegas in the Nevada desert. Ironically, the nation’s love of gambling was completely banned between 1910 to 1931, not that hardcore gamblers did not find a way around this prohibition.
When gambling became legal in Nevada, the first Las Vegas casino, the Pair-o-Dice Club, was built along Highway 91 in 1931, while the first casino-resort on what is known as the Strip was the El Rancho Vegas, which opened in 1941 and was subsequently destroyed by a fire in 1960.
Casinos in the Clouds
And then, in 1983, the “network of networks” that became the modern Internet was created. The online world as we know it was created in 1990 when the World Wide Web was invented. Cloud computing, coupled with ever-faster wifi bandwidth speeds, resulted in an incredible boom in the gambling and online gaming industry. This has resulted in a massive shift away from physical casinos to games played online in the comfort of homes across the globe.
With online gaming, there are a whole host of games to play on a plethora of online casinos, and this ease of accessibility means that they are growing by the day, as has already been seen with the huge influx of new and improved gaming options and online slot machines which continue to pop up on the market.
