Tsogo Sun supports Stop Hunger Now at the Sandton Convention Centre

For the Second year running Tsogo Sun, through their Sandton Convention Centre venue, have partnered with Stop Hunger Now to alleviate the hunger of learners in remote rural areas, as part of commemorating Nelson Mandela International Day on the 18th July.

The Sandton Convention Centre donated the vast Exhibition Hall 2 to Stop Hunger Now for the day, as an estimated 67 corporates brought along 67 employees and clients to package 6 700 meals in 67 minutes. A total of 1 144 people per shift in four shifts of 17 groups of volunteers – resulting in a participation of 4 576 people throughout the day – have packaged meals in 52 production lines of 67 volunteers per shift. One production line per shift was set aside for public participation, giving the private sector the opportunity to get involved in this significant event.

Participating from 9:00 to 10:07, a Tsogo Sun team comprising of staff from the Sandton node – the InterContinental Sandton Towers, Garden Court Sandton City, Garden Court Morningside and Sandton Convention Centre – along with head office personnel, took up the challenge to pack their share of the 6 700 meals targeted for the early morning shift.

Commenting on Sandton Convention Centre’s support of the event, Executive Director Mati Nyazema says, “It is a privilege for us to have supported an event that will reach so many people in their time of need. We salute the efforts of Stop Hunger Now and all the corporates and members of the public who came together to make this vision of feeding hungry learners a reality.”

Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa, alongside the Department of Basic Education, will identify rural schools in the remotest regions of our country where learner hunger can be alleviated with the proceeds of Mandela Day 2013 meal packaging event, majority of these recipients are children that attend schools in the rural regions, including the Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, North West and the North Western Cape.

Stop Hunger Now is an international initiative serving 65 countries.

About Stop Hunger Now
Stop Hunger Now is an international hunger relief agency that has been fulfilling its commitment to end hunger for more than 15 years. Since 1998, the organization has coordinated the distribution of food and other lifesaving aid to children and families in countries all over the world.

Stop Hunger Now created its meal packaging program, in 2005. The program perfected the assembly process that combines rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix including 21 essential vitamins and minerals into small meal packets. Stop Hunger Now provides over 70% of its meals to support transformational development programs such as school feeding programs, vocational training programs, early childhood development programs, orphanages, and medical clinics. Working with these programs helps enhance lives by giving beneficiaries the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty through education, skills development, and health care while also receiving much needed nutrition. Stop Hunger Now’s goal is to allocate 80% of its meals to transformational development programs by 2015.

Every year Stop Hunger Now reserves 10% of its projected meals to respond right away to crisis situations including natural disasters, conflict and famine. In addition to providing food for crisis relief, Stop Hunger also works to meet the immediate needs of those suffering from hunger.
