Acclaimed Makaron chef makes her debut at glitzy Jozi affair
Toasting the then and now of South Africa’s granddaddy of wine routes, Stellenbosch at Summer Place 2014 promises an exquisite culmination of classic and contemporary taste sensations with five formidable Stellenbosch chefs heading to Jozi for this celebration of food, wine, music and art on Wednesdays, 15 October.
Making her debut at this annual showcase presented by Sanlam Private Wealth in Hyde Park, is the talented Tanja Kruger of the award winning Makaron Restaurant at Majeka House, a chic five-star boutique hotel in Stellenbosch.
This foodie femme fatale who is a keen follower of the Slow Food movement, is always searching for fresh, locally grown, ethically produced ingredients and artisan suppliers and she often cooks with Michelin chefs in France and Scandinavia to up her gourmet game. She will be lending culinary prowess to the evening with her playful terrine of Paradyskloof quail and guinea fowl, which will share the spotlight with a slick array of Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc wines.
Each of the five chefs will prepare a gourmet dish that will be paired with more than 70 top quality Stellenbosch wines. This all for guests to revel in, while they mingle with esteemed winemakers and estate owners in the various luxury rooms of Summer Place.
Joining Tanja in the white wine section will be Christiaan Campbell who heads up the two beautifully appointed restaurants on the prestigious Delaire Graff Estate, considered to be one of the country’s leading luxury destinations. He will be serving a salmon trout tartar fritter and cauliflower ‘risotto’; a sublime partner for the Chardonnays and elegant white blends.
Avid foodies can also look forward to seeing celebrity chef Bertus Basson of the Ultimate Braai Master TV show and popular Overture Restaurant, in action. This much-lauded chef is at his best with bold, innovative dishes that put flavour first and his sensory creation of crisp potato and beef brisket will complement a fine selection of Shiraz and Pinotage wines.
Chef Grégory Czarnecki who continues to push the culinary boundaries through innovation at Waterkloof Estate’s ‘restaurant in the sky’, will tempt taste buds with a duo of free range beef filet and braised oxtail, amidst a rare selection of red blends and Cabernet Sauvignons.
These bold red wines will also be enjoyed with Beef Wellington by master saucier Michael Broughton of Terroir restaurant, who is renowned for his classic French cooking techniques, presented in contemporary, seasonal fare.
This year’s Stellenbosch at Summer Place theme is a celebration of yesterday, today and tomorrow’s masters and Gautengers are in for a connoisseur’s feast of stalwarts, fresh talent and innovative tastes from the City of Oaks, also known as the country’s Wine and Gourmet Capital.

And this wealth of creative, culinary talent and top end gourmet distinction will be showcased in Johannesburg, to the delight of very happy guests,” says Annareth Bolton, CEO of the Stellenbosch Wine Routes.
There will also be live music entertainment by the super talented Amazink All Stars, straight from SA’s first township theatre in Kayamandi, whilst art aficionados can feast their eyes on rare pieces from the Sanlam Art Collection – one of South Africa’s finest and most extensive corporate art collections.
