Survival Training – South Africa

The world’s foremost authority on all things survival, Bear Grylls, has teamed up with South Africa’s action/adventure specialists, Group73 to bring the Bear Grylls Survival Academy to South Africa.

Bear Grylls has become known around the world as the most recognized face of survival and outdoor adventure, with experience gained through service in the British Special Forces and his countless missions to every area of extreme terrain the world has to offer. From the Emmy Award winning ‘Man vs. Wild’, to ‘Worst Case Scenario’ and ‘Running Wild with Bar Grylls’ amongst others, his shows have amazed, inspired and captured the world’s attention.

He’s taken this knowledge and experience and applied it to a comprehensive, challenging and ultimately rewarding survival adventure course which will be offered throughout 2015 in SA. A wide variety of survival skills will be covered, expect some very ‘exotic’ snacks, breathtaking abseiling, a helicopter landing, learning astro-navigation and trap and snare skills to mention a few.

Here’s what Bear has to say about it:

“The Bear Grylls Survival Academy South Africa: An incredible location, with such a rich heritage. Over the (course of) 24 hours, you’re going to be learning how to survive in this challenging, but beautiful environment, with the expert help of our instructors. You are going to be using the open plains, challenging rock features, and the mountains, to run, crawl, climb and scramble your way over the terrain. It’s all about empowering you with dynamic, (and potentially) life-saving skills. You’re going to love it, enjoy.”

Group73 are no strangers to outdoor adventure and action either. From airborne adventures, to extreme action simulations and hands on consultation to the movie industry, they continue to apply their significant skill sets and experience to providing an unmatched service in their genre. According to Craig Hicks, Group73’s Marketing Communications Manager, “Teaming up with the Bear Grylls Survival Academy is something we’re extremely proud of, and we guarantee an experience second to none.”

Group73 instructors are highly skilled individuals with extensive experience in specialised units, including SA Special Forces, and are guaranteed to be amongst the most qualified and accomplished in their respective fields worldwide.

The inaugural event is on Saturday 3rd May 2015 in Nooitgedacht, nestled in the mountainous Magaliesberg region of Gauteng in South Africa, approximately 45 minutes from Johannesburg and Pretoria. With a vast array of flora and fauna, including Giraffe, Zebra, Leopard, Nyala and Eland, this is the perfect setting for an event of this nature. The area also has a significant place in South African history with The Battle of Nooitgedacht having taken place on December 13, 1900 during the Boer War.

About Bear Grylls:

Bear Grylls has become known around the world as one of the most recognized faces of survival and outdoor adventure. His journey to this acclaim started in the UK on the Isle of Wight, where his late father taught him to climb and sail. Trained from a young age in martial arts, Bear went on to spend three years as a soldier in the British Special Forces, serving with 21 SAS. It was here that he perfected many of the skills that his fans all over the world enjoy watching him pit against mother-nature.

Despite a free-fall parachuting accident in Africa, where he broke his back in three places, and after enduring months in military rehabilitation, Bear went on to become one of the youngest ever climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

Bear went on to star in the Channel 4 series: Escape to the Legion and seven series of the Discovery Channel’s Emmy nominated TV show Man Vs Wild and Born Survivor, which has become one of the most watched shows on the planet, reaching an estimated 1.2 billion viewers.

Off screen, Bear has lead record-breaking expeditions, from Antarctica to the Arctic, which in turn have raised over $2.5million for children around the world. In recognition for his expertise and service, Bear was appointed as the youngest ever Chief Scout to over half a million scouts in the UK, was awarded an honorary commission as a Lieutenant-Commander in the Royal Navy and as a Lieutenant-Colonel in the notoriously tough Royal Marines Commandos.

He has authored 15 books, including the No 1 Bestseller: Mud Sweat & Tears which was voted the most influential book in China for 2012. Other titles include: Your Life; Train For It, True Grit, A Survival Guide For Life, Born Survivor, Living Wild, Great Outdoor Adventures, Facing Up, Facing the Frozen Ocean, To My Sons and seven children’s fiction novels titled Mission: Survival.

Summer 2013 saw Bear’s new US TV series: Get Out Alive with Bear Grylls running on NBC and voted the No 1 new network reality show in the 18-49 age category. The show aired worldwide on Discovery Channel alongside a further series: Bear Grylls: Escape from Hell and Bear Grylls: Extreme Survival Caught on Camera.

This year Bear has added some fresh programming to his slate, hosting the hit adventure show ‘Running Wild’ on NBC in America, as well as ‘The Island with Bear Grylls’ & ‘Bear’s Wild weekends’ for Channel 4 in the UK.

Bear’s recent appointment as Ambassador for Land Rover will be an exciting journey!
