Tourism Trends in Sub-Saharan Africa

Cape Town, Wednesday 18 April 2018. Euromonitor International’s Senior Research Analyst Christy Tawii will speak on ‘Tourism Trends in Sub-Saharan Africa’ at the World Travel Market (WTM) Africa 2018, which opened today at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

Euromonitor’s presentation will highlight some of the key trends that are contributing to the growth of travel and tourism in the region.

Sub-Saharan Africa continues to see solid growth in its tourism key performance indicators, with inbound arrivals predicted to see solid increases. The region is expected to see a boom in both leisure and business trips, thanks to continued strong economic growth. Many countries in the region are tapping into Lodging, Niche Tourism, Airlines, Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibition sectors and hoping to develop them further to boost tourism earnings.

 The Sub-Saharan Africa Outlook

When compared to mature markets like Europe, there are many untapped economic potentials in the Sub-Saharan Africa region, presenting great opportunities for the travel and tourism industry.  Despite various countries in the region going through tough socio-economic periods, travel and tourism remained a strong contributor to the region’s GDP.

Global Overview

  • Travel and tourism continue to remain on track, outperforming the global economy, with arrivals set to grow by 3.7% and inbound receipts at a stronger rate of 4.1% over 2017, compared to world GDP at 3.5%. Pricing pressure will remain in the near term as there are major uncertainties buffeting the world economy, namely the rocky Trump administration, Brexit, as well as the flaring up of regional tensions across the world with a stand-off looming with North Korea and Japan, and the United States.
  • By 2022, arrivals are expected to reach 1.5 billion, while inbound receipts are estimated to reach U$1,.4 trillion, average spend per trip is expected to be U$963
